I’d pretty much given up on doing print sessions, where I’d make myself sit down and make nice, matte versions of my favorite images. Too much trial and error, color profile hunting, mistake after mistake and general waste.
A little while back I finally bought a ColorMunki Photo profile device. I’ve already used it to calibrate both my Macbook Pro and external monitors and it made a huge difference in quality, plus it made me aware that I’d been using both on way too bright a setting.
After uncovering my formerly somewhat trusty Epson 2200 from paperwork and dust, I used the device to calibrate it. Such a simple process, I figured surely I was missing something and would get it wrong, but no. I just printed a nice version of the image below from Haiti for my gym, correctly and just like it appeared on my monitor, for the first time. The blacks were just a bit choked up due to me, but what a pleasure to not have a magenta or green mess on the first try. Well worth the small investment.
*No compensation has changed hands for this endorsement, though I certainly wouldn’t turn it down…
